5 Simple Plumbing Tips | Triton Plumbing Service London Ontario Plumber

There’s something charming about fall – when the kids go back to school, you start to think about pulling sweaters out of the back of the closet, and look forward to getting ready for the holiday season.

It’s also the time to shut down the garden and prepare for the cold winter months that are soon on their way.

To save you time, we’ve drawn up a brief list of repair warning signs for the most important items that need taking care of so all you need to do this winter is hunker down with a hot chocolate in front of a hockey game.

1. Get Your Drains Cleaned

The drains in your house get a lot of use, but don’t always get a lot of TLC – they build up with fat, hair, food solids, and other tricky, grimy garbage.

This is the perfect time of year to deal with your drains, before the holiday cooking and baking season hits fully.

Chemical cleaners are bad for your drains, so to clean them, you’ll need some tools, some time and some patience.

The easiest and best solution is to call in the pros, because we’re equipped to quickly access and clean your drains, as well as take the opportunity to do a drain checkup for you – just to make sure that nothing needs repairing or replacing.

2. Ensure Your Sump Pump Is Working

Even though most sump pumps will kick in during the spring months, winter is definitely the time to make sure it is in working condition – well before the flood hits.

Weather patterns have been getting unpredictable, and if you’ve been living in London for a while you probably remember some winters in recent memory where we’ve seen deep freezes or unseasonal rain.

When snow starts to pile up outside, or the ground freezes, these are the warning signs and precursors to possible flooding.

Make sure your sump pump works, has easy access, and the discharge pipe is cleared of any blockages – and if you don’t yet have a battery backup, this might be the time to add it, in case of power failure.

3. Turn Off Your Outdoor Faucets

Outdoor faucets that connect to your deck or your garden hose need to be shut down for the season to safeguard your home.

Start by turning off the water from the source – usually found indoors – not just the tap outdoors.

Next, open the outdoor faucet and drain it of all water so that there’s nothing sitting inside of it that can freeze once the temperatures drop.

4. Have Your Hot Water Heater Checked

Many of us enjoy a hot shower after a day snowboarding or an afternoon at the skating rink, in order to warm the chill out of our bones – just one reason hot water is so important during winter.

Hot water tanks are a category unto themselves, and are often beyond a homeowner’s experience.

Most plumbing companies – including Triton Plumbing & Service – offer service calls to maintain, repair and replace water tanks.

The good news is that after you have your hot water tank serviced, you may see some improvement on your bills, as it will run more efficiently.
