BBQ and Fire Pit Gas Line Installation, London Ontario

Gas line installation London Ontario homeowners need most often comes up during backyard renovations, a new BBQ hookup, a fire pit, sometimes both as part of a bigger landscaping project. Most of the time we’re brought in by the general contractor running the renovation, but plenty of homeowners call us directly once they know they need a gas line and want it done right the first time.

It might seem like a simple job, run a pipe, connect the appliance, done. In practice, gas line work has more ways to go wrong than most homeowners realize, and the mistakes aren’t always obvious until something’s already failing.

The Common Mistakes We See

The most frequent problems on backyard gas lines come down to a handful of repeating issues. Undersized lines that can’t handle the distance from the meter to the appliance. Underestimated BTU load, especially when a homeowner adds a second appliance later, a fire pit added after the BBQ line was already sized for just the barbecue, for example. Incorrect piping material for the application. And underground gas pipe that isn’t properly shielded.

Most of what we find in these categories isn’t a homeowner cutting corners, homeowners generally aren’t working on their own gas systems. What we usually run into instead is something grandfathered in, a line installed correctly under the standards of its time, using material or a method that simply isn’t accepted anymore. It’s not that anyone did anything wrong, codes and accepted materials change.

Who’s Actually Allowed to Do This Work

Here’s something worth knowing before you hire anyone for backyard gas work. In Ontario, any gas line, underground or otherwise, has to be installed by a licensed TSSA gas technician holding the correct classification, G3, G2, or G1. If the job involves lighting a new appliance, the installer needs to hold a G2 or G1 licence specifically.

But here’s the part most homeowners don’t know, a personal TSSA licence on its own doesn’t mean you’re covered. A licence tells you the individual knows how to install gas lines correctly. It doesn’t tell you they carry the insurance to back that work. For that, the technician also has to be working for a company that is itself registered with the TSSA.

That distinction matters more than it sounds. A licensed technician doing a side job on a weekend, off the books, outside the company they’re licensed under, isn’t backed by TSSA registration or insurance coverage on that job, even though they personally hold a valid licence. If something goes wrong, you’re not covered the way you’d assume you are. To actually be protected, you need a licensed technician working for a company that also holds TSSA registration, not just one or the other.

There’s no municipal building permit or inspection required for this type of work. That surprises a lot of people, they assume more paperwork means more safety. But the licence and company registration together are the real safeguard, not a permit. A properly registered installer is required to run the correct pressure and leak tests based on the pipe size and length, tag every gas line they install, and check the entire gas system on the property to confirm it’s up to current code, not just the new section they’re adding.

That last part matters. A proper installer isn’t just connecting your new BBQ, they’re responsible for verifying the whole system they’re now attached to is safe, and backed by real coverage while they do it.

Why Gas Line Installation London Ontario Matters for Your Renovation

If you’re planning a backyard renovation with a new BBQ hookup or fire pit, loop in a licensed gas technician early, whether that’s through your general contractor or directly. Getting the line sized correctly for your actual appliance load, and installed with the correct material for underground or exposed runs, is a lot easier to get right at the planning stage than to fix after the patio’s already poured around it.

Triton also handles gas fitting for boilers and in-floor heating systems so if your renovation involves more than a BBQ line, that’s worth a single conversation instead of two contractors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit to install a gas line for a BBQ or fire pit in London Ontario. No, there is no municipal building permit or inspection required. But you do need both a licensed TSSA gas technician and a company that is itself TSSA registered, a personal licence alone doesn’t guarantee insurance coverage on the job.

What licence does a gas technician need to install a BBQ or fire pit gas line. Any TSSA gas technician holding a G3, G2, or G1 classification can install gas piping. If the job includes lighting a new appliance, the installer needs a G2 or G1 licence specifically, and they must be working for a company that is also TSSA registered.

What’s the most common mistake with backyard gas line installations. Undersized piping for the distance or BTU load, incorrect piping material, and improperly shielded underground gas pipe are the most common issues we find, often on older, grandfathered installations rather than new work.

Can a general contractor’s crew install a gas line for my BBQ or fire pit. No. Gas line installation must be done by a licensed TSSA gas technician working for a TSSA registered company, regardless of who’s managing the overall renovation.

Is underground gas pipe different from an above-ground run. Yes. Underground gas pipe requires proper shielding and specific materials rated for burial, this is one of the most common issues found on older installations that predate current standards.
