Your toilet is one of the hardest working fixtures in your home. Most of the time it just works. But when it doesn’t — a running tank, a weak flush, a rocking bowl — it’s hard to ignore. Toilet repair in London Ontario is one of the most common calls we get at Triton Home Service.

I’m Aron Oretan — a Licensed Red Seal Plumber and Steamfitter with 26 years in the trade. Here are the four most common toilet problems I see in London Ontario homes and what each one means.

Poor Flushing Toilet — Why Your Toilet Can’t Clear the Bowl

A weak flush that can’t move solids in one flush is frustrating. However it’s usually fixable without replacing the whole toilet. There are three common causes.

The flapper is closing too soon. The flapper is the rubber seal at the bottom of the tank. When you flush it lifts to release water into the bowl. If it closes before enough water has entered the bowl the flush is weak. Adjusting or replacing the flapper fixes this.

The water level in the tank is too low. Your toilet needs a full tank of water to produce a strong flush. If the water level has dropped — due to a misadjusted fill valve or a slow leak — the flush loses power. As a result solid waste doesn’t clear properly.

The jet way is blocked with calcium. This one surprises most homeowners. Your toilet has a small jet hole at the bottom of the bowl that directs water flow during flushing. Over time calcium deposits build up in that jet way and restrict the flow. Furthermore this tends to happen in homes where the toilet isn’t flushed regularly — for example when people avoid flushing at night to avoid waking others. The calcium builds up and eventually the flush becomes too weak to do its job. Cleaning the jet way clears the blockage and restores full flush power.

Running Toilet — The Sound That Won’t Stop

A running toilet is the most common toilet problem we deal with. You can hear it — a constant trickle or rush of water in the tank long after the flush cycle should have ended. Furthermore it’s costing you money every day it runs. A running toilet can waste thousands of litres of water per month.

The cause is almost always a worn flapper. The flapper sits at the bottom of the tank and creates a watertight seal. Over time the rubber deteriorates, warps, or gets coated with mineral deposits. When it no longer seals properly water trickles from the tank into the bowl continuously — and the fill valve keeps running to compensate.

In most cases a flapper replacement fixes the problem completely. It’s an inexpensive part. However if the flapper seat — the surface the flapper seals against — is damaged or corroded the repair is more involved.

We put together a full video walkthrough showing exactly how to fix a running toilet step by step. If you want to try it yourself before calling a plumber watch this first.

Noisy Toilet — That Foghorn or Hissing Sound After You Flush

A noisy toilet is not usually an emergency. However it is telling you something is wearing out. The most common cause is a failing fill valve.

The fill valve is the mechanism that refills your tank after a flush. When it’s working properly you hear a brief rush of water and then silence. When the fill valve starts to fail it makes a variety of sounds — hissing, humming, a foghorn-like groan, or a high-pitched squeal. As a result these sounds can persist long after the tank should be full.

Replacing a fill valve is a straightforward repair. However if you ignore it the valve will eventually fail completely — and a failed fill valve can cause the tank to overflow or run continuously.

Rocking or Loose Toilet — The Most Serious Problem on This List

This one looks minor. It’s not.

A rocking or loose toilet is caused by one of two things. The bolts holding the toilet to the floor have come loose. Or the toilet flange — the fitting that connects the toilet to the drain pipe — is cracked or broken. In either case the toilet will not fix itself. It will only get worse.

Here’s why this matters. Most toilets are sealed to the flange with a wax gasket. That gasket creates a watertight and airtight connection between the toilet and your drain. When a toilet rocks, that seal breaks. As a result every time you flush, water leaks out under the floor. That water is sewage. It’s soaking into your subfloor with every flush — and if there’s a room or ceiling below, the damage eventually shows up there too.

Furthermore a broken seal allows sewer gas to escape into your home. Sewer gas contains hydrogen sulfide and methane. It smells bad. It’s also potentially harmful with prolonged exposure.

So if your toilet rocks — even slightly — call a plumber. Don’t wait. The cost of fixing a loose toilet is a fraction of the cost of replacing a water-damaged subfloor or ceiling.

How London Ontario Hard Water Affects Your Toilet

London Ontario has hard water. That mineral content affects every component in your toilet tank over time. Flappers deteriorate faster. Fill valves accumulate scale. Jet ways clog with calcium deposits.

The good news is that a proper water treatment system extends the life of every component in your toilet — and every other fixture and appliance in your home. A water softener or whole-home filtration system reduces mineral buildup across the board. As a result you replace toilet parts less often and your fixtures last longer.

When to Repair vs When to Replace Your Toilet

Most toilet problems are repairable. Flappers, fill valves, flush valves, and toilet seats are all relatively inexpensive parts. However there are situations where replacement makes more sense than repair.

If your toilet is more than 20 to 25 years old and requiring repeated repairs — it’s time to consider replacement. Modern toilets use significantly less water per flush than older models. Furthermore if the porcelain is cracked — particularly the bowl — replacement is the only safe option. A cracked bowl cannot be repaired and will eventually fail completely.

When you call Triton we assess the toilet honestly and tell you whether repair or replacement makes more sense based on the age and condition of the unit.

Frequently Asked Questions About Toilet Repair in London Ontario

Why won’t my toilet stop running? A running toilet is almost always caused by a worn flapper that no longer seals properly against the bottom of the tank. Water trickles from the tank into the bowl continuously and the fill valve keeps running to compensate. A flapper replacement typically fixes the problem. Watch our step-by-step video for a full walkthrough.

Why is my toilet flushing poorly? Poor flushing is usually caused by a flapper closing too soon, a low water level in the tank, or calcium buildup in the jet way at the bottom of the bowl. The jet way issue is common in toilets that aren’t flushed regularly — calcium deposits restrict water flow and weaken the flush over time.

Is a rocking toilet serious? Yes. A rocking toilet breaks the wax seal between the toilet and the drain flange. As a result sewage water leaks under your floor with every flush causing subfloor damage. Sewer gas can also escape through the broken seal. A rocking toilet should be repaired as soon as possible — not monitored.

What causes a noisy toilet? Toilet noise after flushing is usually a failing fill valve. The fill valve refills the tank after a flush. When it wears out it makes hissing, humming, or groaning sounds. Replacing the fill valve fixes the noise and prevents a future failure that could cause the tank to overflow.

Can I fix my toilet myself? Some toilet repairs — like replacing a flapper or adjusting the water level — are manageable DIY jobs. Watch our YouTube video for a step by step guide. However repairs involving the flange, the wax seal, or the water supply connection should be done by a licensed plumber. An improper seal creates sewage leaks and sewer gas exposure inside your home.

How much does toilet repair cost in London Ontario? Simple repairs like flapper or fill valve replacement are among the most affordable plumbing service calls. More complex repairs involving the flange or subfloor damage cost more depending on the extent of the work. Contact Triton for an honest assessment before any work begins.
