Nobody plans to replace their water heater. If you’re reading this your heater is probably already failing. Not producing hot water. Leaking from the tank. Making noises it shouldn’t. That’s the reality of water heater replacement in London Ontario. It’s almost always an emergency β not a planned upgrade.
I’m Aron Oretan β a Licensed Red Seal Plumber and Steamfitter with 26 years in the trade. Here’s the honest conversation I have with homeowners every time a water heater fails.
Repair or Replace β How We Make That Decision
When I look at a failing water heater the first thing I check is its age. That single piece of information drives the whole conversation.
If the heater is under 10 years old and the problem is simple β a failed thermostat, a burned out element, a leaking relief valve β repair makes sense. The tank has years of life left. Fix the part and move on.
However if the heater is over 10 years old I’m going to be straight with you. It’s not worth repairing. You spend money on a part today. The tank starts leaking next month. Now you’ve paid for both a repair and a replacement. That’s money wasted.
So the 10 year mark is the line. Past that replacement is the right call every time.
Your Water Heater Options in London Ontario
Most homeowners don’t realize how many options they have. However I want to be clear about something first. Ninety percent of the time a straight tank replacement is the right answer. Hot water is a necessity. Most people just want it back β fast. Not an upgrade conversation while they’re taking cold showers.
That said here are your options and when each one makes sense.
Standard tank water heater. This is what most London Ontario homes have. A tank stores 40 to 60 gallons of hot water and keeps it heated. Installation is fast. It’s reliable. And it does the job for 10 to 12 years with proper maintenance. For most homeowners this is the right choice.
Tankless water heater. A tankless unit heats water on demand. No storage tank. No running out of hot water. If your household regularly exhausts a tank β large family, multiple showers, high demand β tankless is worth talking about. It also lasts longer than a tank when properly maintained. However the tradeoff is higher upfront cost and more complex installation.
Heat pump water heater. A heat pump pulls warmth from the surrounding air to heat your water. As a result it uses much less electricity than a standard electric tank. If reducing your energy use matters to you this is the greener option. It works best in a basement or utility room with good airflow around the unit.
Indirect water heater. If your home has a boiler for heating an indirect water heater connects directly to it. Indirect heaters are extremely durable. They can last 20 to 30 years because they have no internal heating elements to fail. If you have a boiler this option is worth knowing about.
How I Match the Right Heater to Your Home
I don’t try to convince people to upgrade. That’s not how I work.
Instead I ask what matters to you. Then I tell you the truth about your options.
Worried about running out of hot water? I explain the benefits of tankless. Have an existing boiler? I tell you about indirect heaters and their long lifespan. Want to go green? I walk you through heat pump water heaters. Just want hot water back today with no fuss? I replace the tank.
The right heater is the one that fits your home, your budget, and what actually matters to you. Not the most expensive option on the list.

Hard Water and Water Heaters in London Ontario
London Ontario has hard water. It’s not extreme. However it’s enough to affect your water heater over time. Mineral scale builds up inside the tank and on heating elements. As a result the heater works harder, uses more energy, and wears out faster than it should.
Annual maintenance slows this down significantly. For a tank heater that means draining it once a year to flush sediment. For a tankless heater it means cleaning the heat exchanger coils. A simple annual service extends the life of your unit and keeps your energy bills in check.
For homeowners on well water outside the city β in Elgin County or Oxford County β I always recommend a water softener alongside any water heater installation. Softened water extends the life of your water heater, your fixtures, your appliances, and your plumbing drains. Good water quality is the single best investment you can make for everything in your home.

Frequently Asked Questions About Water Heater Replacement in London Ontario
How long does a water heater last in London Ontario? A standard tank water heater typically lasts 10 to 12 years. Hard water speeds up wear so annual maintenance matters. If your heater is past 10 years and showing problems replacement is almost always the right call over repair.
Should I repair or replace my water heater? If the heater is under 10 years old and the problem is isolated repair makes sense. However if it’s over 10 years old replacement is the smarter investment. Repairing an aging tank only delays the inevitable β and often leads to paying for both a repair and a replacement within months.
What’s the difference between tank and tankless water heaters? A tank heater stores hot water and keeps it heated. A tankless heater heats water on demand with no storage. Tankless units never run out of hot water and last longer. However they cost more upfront and require more complex installation. For most London Ontario homes a quality tank replacement is the right choice.
Does hard water affect water heaters in London Ontario? Yes. London’s hard water causes scale buildup inside tanks and on heating elements. Annual maintenance slows this down. For well water properties a water softener extends the life of your water heater and all your plumbing fixtures.
How much does water heater replacement cost in London Ontario? Cost depends on the type of unit, the size, and the complexity of installation. A standard tank replacement is the most straightforward and affordable option. Tankless and heat pump installations involve more labour and potentially gas line or electrical upgrades. Contact Triton for an honest quote based on your specific home.
How long does water heater installation take? A standard tank replacement typically takes two to three hours. Tankless installations take longer depending on venting and gas line requirements. We give you a realistic timeline before we start.
