If you need backflow testing in London Ontario, you need a tester who is registered with the City of London. Not every plumber qualifies. Here is what you need to know.
What Is a Backflow Preventer and Why Does It Need Testing?
A backflow preventer is a mechanical device installed on your water supply. Its job is simple. It stops water from leaving your property and flowing back into the municipal drinking water system.
The City of London requires annual testing of these devices. The test confirms the device is working properly. A failing backflow preventer is a public health risk.
Who Needs Backflow Testing in London Ontario?
Any home or building with a direct connection to the potable water supply may require a backflow preventer. Potable water is the clean drinking water that enters your property through the pressure pipes from the city main.
Your potable water supply extends all the way to each fixture. It ends at your showerhead, your tub spout, your kitchen tap. The air gap above your sink is where the potable system ends and the drain system begins.
The problem happens when that air gap disappears. Think about a garden hose dropped into a swimming pool. That hose connects your drinking water directly to pool water. Pool chemicals and salt water can now be drawn back into your home’s water supply if pressure drops. That is a cross connection hazard.
Common cross connection points in London Ontario homes include irrigation systems, swimming pools, boilers, and fire suppression systems. If any of these are directly connected to your water supply, you likely need a backflow preventer — and annual testing.
Why You Need a City of London Registered Backflow Tester
Here is something most homeowners do not know. Any licensed plumber can install or service a backflow preventer. But only a licensed plumber who also holds an active Ontario Water Works Association Cross Connection Control Specialist certification can legally perform the test.
At Triton Home Service, our plumbers hold both credentials. We are licensed Red Seal Plumbers and certified Cross Connection Control Specialists. We are also listed on the City of London’s registered tester list — which means the City recognizes us as qualified to perform tests that count toward your compliance requirements.
If your tester is not on that list, your test will not be accepted by the City.

What Happens During a Backflow Test
When we arrive, we bring a calibrated pressure differential testing gauge. That gauge is registered and calibrated annually — monitored by both the City of London and BSI Online. We also bring hand tools, a clipboard, and a bucket.
Here is what the process looks like:
We speak with the person responsible for the building. We advise them that the water will need to be shut off briefly. Then we get to work.
We drain the test cocks to keep our gauge clean. Then we test each component of the device — the first check valve, the second check valve, and the relief valve. We record all findings and the line pressure of the system.
A straightforward test takes fifteen to twenty minutes. If the device needs a repair, we can often handle it on the spot. That adds time but saves you a second visit.
When the test is complete, water is restored and you receive your test documentation.
