Copper solder vs press is the choice we make on every job. Copper pipe can be joined two different ways: soldering it the traditional way, or using a press tool to mechanically crimp the fitting on. Homeowners sometimes assume solder is the “proper” way and press is a shortcut. That’s not really true, and here’s how we actually make the call.
Why We Reach for Press First
Press fittings cost more than solder fittings, but the labour savings make up for it. Press is simply faster, and as a contractor, speed on a job often matters more than the cost of the fitting itself. Every one of our vans is equipped with press tools up to 1 inch, which covers the vast majority of residential work. Larger press tools exist for bigger pipe, but they’re not standard equipment on every van.
When We Still Solder
We haven’t abandoned soldering. If a customer specifically wants a soldered joint, we’ll solder it. And in tight spaces where a press tool physically can’t fit, soldering is still the right call.+
Is One More Reliable Than the Other?
When both methods are done correctly, with joints properly cleaned and prepped beforehand, reliability is comparable between the two. This really comes down to speed and access, not which one holds up better over time.
The One Exception: Low Pressure Steam
Copper press fittings are not rated for low pressure steam applications, so solder is used there instead. This is worth knowing, but it’s not something most London area homeowners need to think about. Low pressure steam systems are almost exclusively a commercial application, not something you’ll find in a typical residential home.
